Brampton Skatepark in East London has undergone a transformation to take it from an un-usable patch of space, to become a new thriving area for skateboarders, through the incredible efforts of Skate Newham and supported by Skateboard GB and Subway.
The skate space in Newham has been through a transformation over the last year with the council providing a mini ramp and a smooth concrete space for skateboarders to use. Over the last few weeks, Skateboard GB and Subway has provided the funding to create concrete and steel skateable structures in the location, making way for a new skateable sculpture garden.
Skate Newham are the creators behind the project and have been working thoroughly for the last two years to make the new skateable space become a reality. Over the next few years, Tom and the team plan to install a new feature every 6 months as part of the ongoing growth to the skate space.
Earlier this year, Subway and Skateboard GB committed funding to support multiple skateboarding projects across the UK, giving thousands of skateboarders access to new facilities. As part of its Fresh Moves initiative, Subway is helping to grow up-and-coming sport by improving accessibility and promote active lifestyles.
Skateboarding became a featured sport the Tokyo and Paris Olympics Games, with Skateboard GB National Team skater, Sky Brown, scooping the Bronze medal at both events. Research by IOC revealed that skateboarding was the 4th most searched for sport globally during the games; this in turn has helped create a surge in skateboarding participation in London and the rest of the UK and completion of the Brampton Gardens project will provide a much needed space to be used by skaters of all ages; including by a much larger proportion of women and girls, children and families than is usually found in skateparks.
Neil Ellis, Head of Engagement at Skateboard GB said “We are thrilled to see the final works being completed at Newham. The Skate Newham Team have achieved something that’s incredibly inspiring for skaters and it was great to help the with the future of the project”.
Kirsty Elston, Senior Marketing Director at Subway said “Our partnership with Skateboard GB represents a key milestone in our Fresh Moves initiative, supporting the growth of skateboarding and improving access and opportunities for people of all ages to get involved. The opening of Brampton Gardens Skate highlights our dedication to promoting sport within our communities and creating inclusive spaces where everyone can engage with skateboarding.
Brampton Skatepark Jame will take place from 10am on Sunday 20th July for people to skate the new features for the first time. There will also be free beginner sessions, skateboard jams, music and giveaways throughout the day. Entry is free.
